Study Flash

Import/Export

Note: To use the import/export functionality you have to purchase the $0.99 in-app purchase. Why? Because I spent a lot of time on Study Flash, and it's nice to receive enough income from it to keep it in the App Store.

Exporting

You can export any card deck to an external file for safe keeping. When you're on the deck you want to export (this can be the Home deck), tap the Import/Export and choose "Export to a File."

Mail will open up to a blank email that has a .studyflash file as an attachment. Email this file to yourself, for safe keeping, or to a friend, to share a deck with them.

Troubleshooting

Not much can go wrong when exporting, just make sure you have Mail set up to send email and you should be fine.

Importing

You can import cards and decks from any Study Flash 1 file, or from a Study Flash 2 export file. These files should come from either studyflashapp.com or a previously exported file. Editing these files directly is normally not a good idea.

To import from Study Flash 1

If you have an old file you exported from Study Flash 1, and wish to import the contents into Study Flash 2, open the file up in your email, or Dropbox, or wherever you are importing from, highlight and copy all of the text in the file, and open Study Flash. Move to the deck you want imported into (usually the Home deck) and tap the Import/Export, choose "Import from Study Flash 1". This feature will look in your Pasteboard for a Study Flash 1 import file. If it finds one, just wait a few seconds and all your cards should be imported.

To import from Study Flash 2

Importing from Study Flash 2 is easy and convenient after you get the hang of it. Importing from a Study Flash 2 file relies on iOS's ability to open certain files with other applications. To use this functionality you'll need to be using an app that supports it. Two of such apps are Mail (built-in), and Dropbox (convenient).

Mail:

To import from Mail, simply email the .studyflash file to yourself in an email, and tap the email attachment to open it. See the following set of images to illustrate the process.

Dropbox:

To import from Dropbox, simply tap the file in the Dropbox app, tap the "Open in" icon, and choose Study Flash. The following images illustrate the process.

Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble importing into Study Flash, make sure you are following the above steps. Sometimes it takes a few times to get a feel for how the import process works, but I'm confident that once you do, it will be very easy.

If all else fails, feel free to send me an email with the attachment and an explanation of the problem you are having. I will try to answer as soon as possible.

Sharing

You can also share your cards via Bluetooth with a friend. To do this, both you and your friend must have Study Flash installed and have purchased the Import/Export in-app purchase.

Wait a few seconds (or longer depending on how many cards you are sharing) and the cards will be imported onto your friend's device.

Troubleshooting

You and your friend must both have Bluetooth enabled for this option to work. If you do not have Bluetooth, or do not want to enable it, you can optionally share with a friend by exporting to an email and emailing it to them.

Card Management

Besides the obvious things like editing the background, font, etc. of cards there are a few more advanced features that you may not be aware of.

Moving Cards and Decks

You can move cards, and even entire decks, around to help organize your data. Moving a card can be visualized as taking a card from one stack on your desk, and putting it into another stack on your desk.

To move a card or deck, tap to Edit the entry, and select the "Belongs To" option. This will show you all the decks available to put the card or deck into. Browse to the destination deck and select Done, followed by Save.

Searching

From any deck, you can search for decks or cards that contain the text you are looking for. If you have lots of cards, this is an easy way to find a specific one. From the deck you want to search, scroll the list down with your finger until the search bar appears. Type the text you are looking for in the search field, and choose whether you want to search for cards or decks. As you type, the list of cards should update with only the cards that match your search. Note that for speed reasons, the search function only searches the current deck, not the decks underneath it.
